New Zealand's Rangitoto Island sits majestically just off the coast of Auckland and boasts a rare, distinct landscape consisting of rugged lava crops, lush native bush and golden sandy coves. On this Rangitoto island tour you'll find out even more about this unique volcanically-formed structure and journey through its many scenic, natural highlights while your friendly, informative and experienced guide provides you with commentary on both the geology and history of the island. Well worth the short ferry ride it takes to get there, once you've reached Rangitoto's shores you'll discover its many scenic natural highlights and take in a variety of panoramic views and impressive natural formations that only add to its charm. It's this volcanic landscape that helps to make Rangitoto Island particularly unique; lava caves, pillars, tunnels and fields add an eerie character to its geology, and all serve as lingering reminders of the island's explosive origins.

Booked this tour for our last day in Auckland and it didn’t disappoint

Booked this tour for our last day in Auckland and it didn’t disappoint! Booking process had a few hiccups where we had to change our original appointment but they were extremely accommodating. The ferry ride over to the island was smooth despite the wild weather! The tour guide, Bob, was awesome and extremely knowledgeable about everything in regards to the volcano and island. The small hike to the top was easy, even with our 18 months old. The drive around the island on the 4wd tractor thingo was great as well and had an added bonus of putting the little one to sleep! Great half day trip

My boyfriend and I had an excellent day out on our Rangitoto Island tour while visiting Auckland

My boyfriend and I had an excellent day out on our Rangitoto Island tour while visiting Auckland. Would highly recommend the experience to anyone looking for some local history and beautiful scenery. Our tour guide was wonderful and had a great knowledge of the area and we learnt a lot about the volcano in the past and its present state.

Awesome tour

Awesome tour. Bob our tour guide was fantastic. He gave out so much information about the island and was extremely interesting. The walk up to the summit was fantastic and enjoyed getting off along the way. It was a great way to see the entire island.

We were last to arrive for the 4wd tractor tour and our family had to sit apart I had to sit my 13-year-old son on my lap

We were last to arrive for the 4wd tractor tour and our family had to sit apart I had to sit my 13-year-old son on my lap, it was an uncomfortable ride to the volcano. I didn't go up the top but my family did and said it was very nice with lovely views. The ride back was better as we all sat together. The tour guide was informative and witty.

Very informative tour of the island

Very informative tour of the island, suitable for all ages and most levels of fitness. Some criticism is that the window you are given to catch the return ferry is slightly too small. We took the tour truck to the base of the volcano where they give you time to walk up to the rim and then back down to the truck for a return ride to the shore. As the return ride is less of a tour than a scenic drive there is the option to walk back and explore some of the other things on the island like the lava tunnels. We chose to walk, but even with minimal stopping en route we only just made it back to the ferry on time. However, this should only be a problem if you take the midday ferry as I hope the morning trip would allow you to take the afternoon boat back if you miss the first one.

Rangitoto Island was amazing
Yuni Yuni 4 years ago

Rangitoto Island was amazing. I took the tour and it was fantastic. The view at the summit was incredible. I took the earliest ferry, and after the tour, a couple of other people and I decided to hike up to the lava caves. The walking trail was fairly easy but gravelly. It was a pleasant experience after all. The tour guide was really informative, but as I am a non-native English speaker, it could be quite difficult to listen to the guide as we were on an open-air truck.

I really enjoyed this tour

I really enjoyed this tour. The ferry ride over was very quick. The walk u to the top of the volcano is a challenge but worth the views that await you.

Walking through the lava fields is a remarkable experience. A must do for all the adventurers out there.
