The Hollyford Track, Milford Sound is a spectacular three-day guided walk from the mountains to the sea through the ever-changing landscapes of New Zealand’s famous Fiordland National Park. This famous walking journey also incorporates a thrilling jet boat ride and a scenic helicopter flight into Milford Sound – its the ultimate New Zealand hiking experience! The Hollyford Track provides a spectacular multi-day hike through rainforests, dramatic glacial landscapes, and remote high country terrain where you will encounter waterfalls, wildlife, rivers and lakes, all the way to the wild pounding surf of the Tasman Sea. While en route, your every need is well provided for by friendly and professional guides who are experienced in ensuring your safety and enjoyment for the duration of this epic journey. Knowledgeable guides will also entertain you along the way with historic stories, show you important Maori cultural sites and inform you of the fascinating geological spectacles found in this World Heritage Listed National Park.'

In terms of accommodation, The Hollyford Track features twin-share private lodges, with bedding supplied, where guests can enjoy hot showers and flushable toilets. All of the walking will surely work up an appetite, and hikers can look forward to great food and company at the end of each day as all meals are supplied. For an unforgettable experience the Hollyford Track in New Zealand offers a myriad of dramatic landscapes, experiences and scenic wonders around every corner. This all-inclusive three-day wilderness journey is suitable for a wide range of fitness levels so that everyone can see and experience for themselves the geological wonders of this World Heritage Listed National Park. FAQs

How far and how long do we walk for each day?

  • Day One: 19.5km’s walking from the start of the track to Pyke River Lodge with 5 - 7 hours of walking. You will also cover many km’s travelling by our shuttle transport from Queenstown or Te Anau along beautiful lakes and glacial carved valleys to the start of Hollyford Track
  • Day Two: 15km’s between Pyke River Lodge and Martins Bay Lodge with 4 - 5 hours of walking. You will also cover approximately 25km’s by jet boat down the Hollyford River and across Lake McKerrow
  • Day Three: 8.5km’s walking along Martins Bay Spit taking 3 - 4 hours. You will also take a spectacular flight along the coast and into the breath-taking Milford Sound before boarding our shuttle transport to return to Te Anau or Queenstown

Where can I park my vehicle?

  • You will need to make arrangements for your vehicle to be stored at your hotel/accommodation and generally they will do this while you are walking, if you are staying with them again upon your return. You will need to check this with your hotel/accommodation

What time do I depart and arrive back in Queenstown or Te Anau?

  • If staying in Queenstown you will be picked up on Day 1 from your hotel/accommodation between 6.30am and 7am to depart, or if staying in Te Anau you will need to make your way to the Fiordland Cinema by 9am. Please note that from the turn-over of daylight saving, all trips will depart from Te Anau ONLY - there is no pick-up from Queenstown. This finishes at the end of the season which is the 19th of April
  • On Day 3 you will arrive back in Te Anau at approximately 4.30pm and Queenstown at approximately 7pm. We highly recommend all our guests to start their Hollyford Journey in Te Anau, for a more relaxing start to the trip. By starting in Queenstown you will be picked up at approx, 6.30am, in comparison, by starting in Te Anau you will simply meet the group for morning tea at 9am

Are there toilets on the track?

  • Both lodges have flush toilets and there are clean long drop style toilets at our lunch huts/stops

What To Bring

  • Jacket - waterproof and with hood (you can borrow one of ours)
  • Boots - hiking / tramping boots or sturdy walking shoes (preferably with ankle support and well 'worn in' / 'broken-in'!)
  • Socks - wool or thermal blend
  • Skin layer - wool or polypropylene thermal long sleeve / long leg - top and bottom
  • Mid layer - wool or micro fleece long sleeve for when cold wool, microfleece or t-shirt short sleeve for when warm
  • Outer layer - fleece jacket (preferably windproof)
  • Trousers quick dry walking trousers
  • Shorts quick dry walking shorts (with wool or polypropylene thermal long leg underneath for the classic Kiwi walking look!)
  • Hat wool or fleece for when cold peaked or brimmed for when sunny
  • Gloves wool or fleece
  • Water bottle 500ml minimum
  • We advise bringing your own backpacks and rain jackets if you have them as they are likely to be more comfortable and well 'worn in' / 'broken in'

Additional Information

  • If you have any dietary requirements such as food allergies, vegetarian, vegan, gluten free etc…please let us know in advance so that we can make your time with us as comfortable as possible
  • PLEASE NOTE: Minimum age for children to be part of the 3-day walk is 10yrs!
  • On day one you will be required to carry a small self provided backpack, containing suitable clothing and walking footwear for the 19.5km walk

Cancellation Policy

  • Within 21 days of walk departure date: cancellation fee is 100% of the total trip cost
  • Between 21 – 59 days from walk departure date: cancellation fee is 50% of the total trip cost
  • Between 60 – 89 days from walk departure date: cancellation fee is 25% of the total trip cost
  • 90 days or more from walk departure date: cancellation fee is NZD$100 per person
  • Once the walk has commenced no refund applies due to any circumstance
  • April trips only depart from Te Anau

Itinerary

Day One (Accommodation: Pyke Lodge)

  • Departing Queenstown 6.30am, you will travel alongside Lake Wakatipu before picking up those starting in Te Anau at 8.30am. Together you will travel through the beautiful Eglinton Valley on your way to the start of the Hollyford Valley
  • Your guide will stop at the start of the track where you will put on your back pack before before walking alongside the swift clear waters of the Hollyford River beneath the gaze of the mighty Southern Alps, including Mt Tūtoko (2746m) and Mt Madeline (2537m)
  • As the track undulates gently through native beech forest and beside impressive tumbling waterfalls you’ll retrace the footsteps of early Māori and pioneer explorers and enjoy interesting historical tales and interpretation of forest and bird life
  • After a 19.5km walk you be impressed by a 3 course cuisine and the opportunity to relax with a post dinner drink and gaze over the majesty of Mt Madeline

Day Two (Accommodation: Martins Bay Lodge)

  • Start the day with a tasty cooked or continental breakfast before visiting Lake Alabaster and learning the history and geology of the area. Today you will cover 15km
  • You’ll have the option of crossing one of Fiordland’s longest swing bridges before taking a short walk to board our jet boat
  • Enjoy a scenic ride down the Hollyford River and along Lake McKerrow
  • After calling in at the early pioneer settlement site of Jamestown, you’ll walk through ancient Podocarp forest amongst native forest giants, some up to 1000 years old
  • Thunderous surf on the West Coast is a prelude to a bay of boulders where the rare Fiordland Crested penguin is a seasonal visitor
  • Further on Long Reef plays host to a rookery of native New Zealand fur seals
  • This evening you’ll be hosted at Martins Bay Lodge, close to the mouth of the Hollyford River

Day Three

  • After another hearty breakfast you’ll explore Martin’s Bay Spit, a famous landmark separating the powerful Tasman Sea from the Hollyford Valley, and a coastal landscape that’s a world away from the previous days
  • Your guide knows all about the native flora of this unique environment, helping you discover the diversity of this truly remote area
  • Learn about lifestyle of the early Māori and their pounamu trails that pass through the valley
  • You’re encouraged to explore the isolated beach and sand dunes in your own time, giving you the chance to reflect on this intrepid journey
  • Returning to Martins Bay Lodge for lunch, say goodbye to your lodge hosts before boarding your helicopter for a scenic flight along the rugged coast into the truly spectacular and dramatic Milford Sound-- marvel at the grandeur of vertical granite walls rising from the sea
  • In Milford you’ll be met by your coach driver and travel the impressive Milford Road through the famous Homer Tunnel and journey back to Te Anau (for approx. 4.30pm) and Queenstown (for approx. 7pm)
Day one is the only day where you are required to carry your pack. If you have a reasonable level of fitness you will find it pleasantly challenging, and highly rewarding!
