Differences between Cruises

Encounter Nature Cruise

  • The Encounter Nature Cruise is the longest cruise on the fjord at 2 hours and 15 minutes and it’s on a much smaller boat (75 person capacity) so more of an intimate style cruise. Get up close to nature on the longest, small boat nature cruise in Milford Sound. This interactive and personal cruise offers an intimate Milford Sound experience and excellent viewing opportunity of wildlife including seals, dolphins and penguins when in season. Specialist Nature Guides share their local knowledge with lively and informative commentary while roaming the vessel delving into the history, geology and wildlife of the fiord, and the wheelhouse is open to join and speak with the skipper. With raincoats available on board, there's a chance to taste pure glacial water straight from the waterfalls.

Nature Cruise

An extended and leisurely cruise on board a small catamaran, with a 2 hour cruise time and English only commentary. Cruise the full length of the fiord on a modern, purpose-built day cruise vessel with comfortable indoor seating and tall windows for panoramic viewing of spectacular Milford Sound. With a flexible and relaxed itinerary, enjoy a large and wide open outdoor, upper level deck for excellent wildlife viewing including seals, dolphins and penguins when in season. A specialist Nature Guide shares their local knowledge with lively and informative commentary while roaming the vessel, and the wheelhouse is open to join and speak with the skipper

Suman Deep 2 years ago Nature encounter cruise was one of the best experience of my south island tour. Commentary on the cruise was interesting. Watching seals was fun too. But my favourite part was the rear tip of the vessel was under the highest NZ waterfall and we were asked to look above! When I looked down all I saw was exciting and smiling faces! I will highly recommend the experience.
Great day; didn’t go all the way to the Tasman due to weather

Great day; didn’t go all the way to the Tasman due to weather, but still a good view. Wet weather made the waterfalls magnificent and the kayaking was informative and fun. The Discovery Centre was interesting but the view a little murkier than expected. Lunch was good.
